On February 20th, CBS did a segment on some of the conflict issues confronting our society and how we best care for our elders: “The Caregivers: Sibling Disputes Over Care” (click for a link to the video, may take awhile to load). And hurray for mediators everywhere because mediators were featured in the segment and linked to at the end!
Our work at educating the public as to the benefits of mediation is just beginning.
It’s well understood that we are living longer and the number of people over 65 represents a large segment of our population. As our parents age, numerous issues arise that can lead to all sorts of conflict within families and extended families. Enter elder mediation. This area is particularly well-suited for the mediation of disputes.
Sherrod Deputy of www.EldercareMediators.com and her partner Janet Mitchell have formed the very first global network of elder mediators. If you are interested in tapping into this wonderful niche area and being one of the first to develop a practice in your area, I recommend you check out eldercaremediators.com.
The founders of Eldercare Mediators are going to spend a lot of time and energy marketing and promoting the nationwide network of mediators who join their ranks. If you think this might be a good fit for you, check it out.
I would suggest getting advanced training on these issues. Another mediation marketing tips reader, Patti Bertschler has provided the following information:
The First National Symposium on Ethical Standards for Elder Mediation, April 19-20, 2007 at Temple University ’s James E. Beasley School of Law, Philadelphia , PA will address issues of ageism, capacity and self-determination in elder mediation.
Featured speakers will include Harry “Rick” Moody, Nancy Neveloff Dubler, Robert Baruch Bush and distinguished panelists such as Charley Sabatino and Erica Wood of the ABA ’s Commission on Law and Aging and others from the fields of mediation, elder law, bioethics, geriatric ethics, geriatric medicine and social work.
A brochure, agenda and on-line registration is available at www.mediation-services.org. Please note that space is limited to the first 100 registrants. The current rate of $375 is good until March 15 and includes meals and the special Thursday Evening Dinner event.
This conference may be a great place to start.
In marketing getting to a new market first is often unbeatable. So, congratulations to Sherrod and Janet for creating the first global network of elder mediators. Check out your local area, you could be first locally!
Even if elder mediation doesn’t interest you, find a niche and dominate it!
You can do it.
NEVER GIVE UP!
Your partner in peace,
Kristina Haymes
